Battlefields Trip 2018

Seventy five S2 pupils and 8 Staff have recently returned from the History Department’s 17th visit to the WWI Battlefields of Belgium & France.

On day one in Belgium we visited some preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood and three large mine craters called the ‘Pool of Peace’, ‘Hill 60’ and ‘Caterpillar’. We also visited Messines Church, the crypt was the only part of the Church that survived the fighting and was used as an advanced dressing station. We then went to Hooge Crater museum and the Blackwatch Monument on the Menin Road near Ypres.

On day two we travelled to the Somme region of France, where we visited the battlefields at Beaumont Hamel and the Thiepval memorial where we found the names of some soldiers who were former pupils of Stirling High School and a couple of pupils were able to pay their respects to relatives who lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme. We also visited the Hearts Memorial, Lochnagar Mine Crater and finally the Vimy Ridge memorial to the Canadian soldiers.

On the final day of the Battlefields experience we were back in Belgium where we started the day at Essex Farm Cemetery, this was where there was an Advanced field Hospital and John McCrae wrote the famous poem “In Flanders Fields”. We then went to Poelkapelle British cemetery where 84% of the graves are unknown and visited Passcheandael and Tyne Cot Cemetery (with over 12,000 graves). We also paid our respects to German soldiers who lost their lives at Langemark cemetery which is one of the few in Belgium for German soldiers. We finished the afternoon of with a visit to Ypres town itself.

On the final evening we attended the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, held at 8pm every evening, and then carried out our own private memorial ceremony.

Many thanks to all involved for organising such a wonderful trip. (photo attached)
