Claire Strathern

About me

I am an Arctic Ranger Team leader with Canterbury Travel in Finnish Lapland (they are the lead santa holiday specialists and I get to work in the snow, with santa and his elfs and help every child who comes to meet santa have the most magical Christmas ever!)

Left school

June 2016

Senior Phase

English, Maths, Music, Biology, Geography, Chemistry and Art and Design.

Choosing my Destination

Pupil Support, peers and my teachers all helped me to explore my passions which led me to where I am today.

Extra Curricular & Work Experience

Volunteer work with the Royal Highland Education Trust helped me to become confident speaking to large groups of people and help educate the next generation. I also volunteered with local theatres as a chaperone for their young cast members where I learned how to coach, look after and interact with young children which I still use these skills to this very day working with children who come to visit santa in lapland.

Skills I've developed

The skills I learned at school and during my volunteering work have been crucial to me during my career. Some of these skills are communication not only with those the same age as me but of those significantly younger, team work is another that I have to use on a daily basis where I have to work with my colleagues to ensure that the guests who we are working with experience the best experience possible, creativity is one of the most important in my job because of the nature of it.

I work in finnish lapland for the lead santa holiday specialist and we have to make the guests and especially their kids believe they are meeting santa and his elfs! If they don't believe the magic is gone and they pay a lot of money to come all the way to Finland to meet santa so it has to be magical!

My Advice

Don't give up, you might not be popular and you might feel invisible in high school but honestly the life I have now is better than I could have ever imagined, every job I have had and every course in college and university no matter how hard they were and yes I did want to give up on multiple occasions but I am so glad I didn't because I now have a job I didn't know existed whilst I was at school and it is honestly the best job I have ever had and I am so grateful to all my teachers for helping and supporting me!
