Choosing your destination
I started training in performing arts from a very young age and it was always encouraged throughout my time at school! During my time at Stirling High school I was supported in my auditions and performances in shows such as Oliver!, Matilda and Tonight from the West End.
Extra Curricular & Work Experience
At school I took part in our school musicals, Bugsy Malone and Hairspray which were so much fun and I still have the best memories of. I also took part in school orchestra as a tympani player and would perform at numerous concerts or events, either singing or reciting monologues or poetry. In my final year at Stirling High School I started an after school Musical Theatre club (a pupil led club that still exists today!), which encouraged students from every year to come together and not just learn numbers but to sit down and talk about musicals and the performing arts, why they’re so important, sharing our likes and dislikes and finding their passion towards the performing arts. And from the age of 7-19 I attended the Stirling based performing arts school Stageworx, where the trained and shaped me for the career I’m now very lucky to be in.
Skills I've developed
Determination and perseverance were definitely skills that were honed in my time at Stirling High School and I wouldn’t be where I am today without those. Confidence for sure, because high school isn’t always easy but it is where you take the first steps in finding yourself! Both the ability to work independently and in/leading a team, creativity and imagination which is massive in my line of work. The desire to explore (in everything but especially when reading scripts) finding new intentions or beats, different characters and their train of thought. Social Skills is huge as well, not just the ability to communicate with others but to realise you can learn something from other people every day.
My Advice
Like I said before, high school is the first steps in finding yourself, but that’s also all it has to be, the first steps, no more than that. You don’t need to have everything figured out even though it feels that way.
If you do know what you want then terrific go after that! Attack it and don’t stop!
But if you don’t, please don’t stress about it, you’re going to be figuring yourself out for a very long time so just enjoy the process. Enjoy seeing your mates everyday, enjoy learning new things and ENJOY SUMMER HOLIDAYS! I can’t tell you what I’d give for 7 straight weeks off 🤣.
