Erin McKenzie
About me
Currently half way through my BA (Hons) Popular Music degree at Edinburgh Napier University.
Left school
June 2020.
Senior Phase
In S4 I achieved National 5 (SCQF level 5) Art & Design, Design & Manufacture, English, French, Geography, Music and Maths.
In S5 I achieved Higher (SCQF level 6) Art and Design, Music, Music Tech, English and French.
In S6 I achieved Higher (SCQF level 6) Photography, Admin & IT and Advanced Higher (SCQF level 7) Music.
Choosing my Destination
I mainly researched my options outwith school, online on my own and at home with my family. At school I took advice from my music teacher as I specifically wanted to enter the music industry.
Extra Curricular & Work Experience
I worked at Big Noise and the Tolbooth and Albert halls to add experience to my CV and personal statement and I also attended a musical theatre school three nights a week and took part in any music events/clubs that the school made available.
Skills I've developed
I have developed better communication and confidence since starting university and find that I am finally using all the creativity that I had in school to work towards getting my degree, creating bodies of work that I love and starting work in the industry.
My Advice
When I was in school I was extremely focused on getting into any university and didn't really look at other options available to me. I would love to look back and see what other possible paths there were for me other than university, although my popular music course turned out to be the right choice for me, if it hadn't been then I would've been very stuck.
It is very common to not know what you want to do, so take the time to look at what you really enjoy in your day to day life. If you do know then speak to the teachers that know most about the field that you would possibly like to work in in the future, they are there to help you.
