Rhona Samphier

I am currently in New Zealand before starting my career as a Prosthetist/Orthotist with Blatchfords in Sheffield. I studied P&O at the University of Strathclyde for 4 years, and graduated in June 2024. P&O combines both engineering and working with people in a medical environment - both of which I love.

Choosing your destination

My family were a big support for me getting to where I am, and gave great advice. I also had support from careers advisor at SHS which helped me choose which subjects to study and any extra curricular activities that may help me get to where I wanted to be.

Extra Curricular & Work Experience

I did my work experience with my Aunty who guided me into P&O. During my time in the 4th, 5th, and 6th years of high school, I honed my communication skills and boosted my confidence, which are crucial for my current job. Being part of the high school hockey team also enhanced my teamwork abilities, which are once again essential in my work environment.

Skills I've developed

Throughout my 8 month placement my communication skills have developed as I worked in a small team where talking through situations were extremely important to come to a decision which will benefit the patients. This also benefitted my critical thinking as you must take into consideration all options, and decide which is best

Take advice from those around you. They can help you a lot with deciding where you want to go in life, as they will know you’re best qualities and in what profession you may excel. Also make sure to try different things - you may enjoy something that you’d never thought you’d like.
